Sequencing Grants
We will be giving many awards in the amount of ~$5,200 USD to support short-read, whole genome Illumina sequencing of your samples to 12x or higher coverage. We have competitive pricing from Harvard Bauer Core (Boston, USA) for sequencing.
Investigators will send their extracted DNA on standard SPS plates (96 well) directly to Harvard Bauer Core. The pricing is better for samples organized on 384 well plates. As a ballpark estimate, the cost for whole genome sequencing of 60 samples of a 1Gb genome to ~15x coverage is about $5200. Investigators who wish to sequence more samples or to higher coverage are welcome to do so through a cost-sharing mechanism. Note that while the library prep cost remains linear, the sequencing cost improves with increased sample number
Applicants who are interested in sequencing more than one species should independent applications for each species.
Prepare to apply
-
- If you would like to request more than $5200 USD from MacroMar, please follow the instructions in the spreadsheet to change the amount covered by MacroMar. Due to the submission system, costs will be covered on a unit basis (e.g., either library prep for X samples, or sequencing only, or some combination of library prep and sequencing). We will consider exceptions for research groups who do not currently have funding or have very large genomes and whose total exceeds $5200 USD for 60 samples to 12x minimum coverage.
How to apply
Upcoming application deadlines
We plan to fund sequencing for about 3-5 species at each deadline.
- December 1, 2026
- February 1, 2027
- May 1, 2027
- August 1, 2027
If funds are not spent, we will announce more dates in 2027. In total we aim to support sequencing for about 20-30 species over the course of the project.
Scoring rubric
Applications will be scored according to the following rubric:
- State of sampling (highest score for samples in hand with extracted DNA)
- Metadata submitted with application (highest score for data submitted in our standardized format)
- Samples representative of: species range, population structure, and/or environmental gradients (highest score for all three)
- Biogeographic representation (highest score for samples from underrepresented habitats or geographic areas)
- Reference exists (highest score for publicly available reference)
- Taxonomic/Phylogenetic representation (highest score for phyla underrepresented in MacroMar or RepAdapt)
- Ability to match funds or statement of financial need
Submission instructions (if you are awarded)
Instructions for submitting your samples may be found in the Sequencing Awards page.
